About this checklist
Nintendo's Game Boy, released in 1989, made handheld gaming mainstream. The grey DMG-01 with its green-tinted screen sold alongside Tetris and was followed by the slimmer Game Boy Pocket (1996), the Japan-only backlit Game Boy Light (1998) and the Game Boy Color (1998).
The Game Boy Advance arrived in 2001, the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP added a lit screen and a rechargeable battery in 2003, and the tiny Game Boy Micro closed the family in 2005. Accessories such as the Game Boy Camera and Printer, and the Super Game Boy adapter for the Super Nintendo, are collectibles in their own right.
This checklist covers the whole Game Boy family. Each model shows photos from Save All collectors and how many of them own one. Add your handhelds in the app to see how complete your Game Boy collection is.
Frequently asked questions
What does DMG-01 mean?
DMG-01 is the model number of the original 1989 Game Boy. DMG stands for Dot Matrix Game.
What is the difference between the Game Boy Advance SP models AGS-001 and AGS-101?
The AGS-001 has a front-lit screen, while the later AGS-101 has a brighter backlit screen, which makes it the more sought-after version.
Was the Game Boy Light sold outside Japan?
No. The backlit Game Boy Light (1998) was only released in Japan.
